Live Chat Options
skpacman
First, I would like your opinion.

Should we have a live chat system here or not?

I, personally, would love a live chat system. Group or private (or both) is fine with me.

There are a few options to consider.

First, NetriX has made a chat infusion. But, just like RumbleTalk's addon, it's limited, integration is dicey, and includes advertisements from the creators. (no offense meant, just an observation)

My suggestion is to use the one I found on http://anantgarg.com (which is also gpl licensed for non-commercial use)

I can make an addon out of it if needed. Otherwise I'll just cram all of the code into a panel and call it good . unfortunately it requires sessions, and we use cookies on 7.02. I wonder if there's a way to change that in the chat code...

Ideas? Suggestions?

heh. that leaves it wide open.

from my research, i've found that most php-mysql-jquery solutions suck because of neglect or bad design by the original creator. I think I'm going to bastardize the one from anant garg and re-create it from scratch to integrate into php-fusion as an infusion, using cookies instead of sessions........

sounds like a tall order. but now I have something to work on! outside of the usual site stuff!

I'm going to move forward with this unless anyone else has a better solution that is FREE and aGPL compatible.

As long as it is not IRC based or connected. That is not popular with a big number of hosts.

I actually thought that Ajax chat seemed ok, once you get a grip of the config. http://frug.githu...AJAX-Chat/

BTW, I have a dedicated domain prepped to be launched, chat.php-fusion.net , maybe we could use that globally?

global php-fusion chat would be nice.

i was thinking more about a one-on-one or group chat integrated into the site for "live help" that's recorded in the database, using our existing members foor security

been working on wrapping my head around the jquery fb/google style chat but without sessions, its looking like a dud.

why were sessions removed from PHP-Fusion after v7.1?
and is there a way to start sessions without editing core files?

Another one that could work: http://forum.code...and-mysql/

... still looking around

I think I have a working system. I'll put it on this site for admin testing and review once I create the necessary infusion files.

I think this chat system is great,I do have a couple questions and requests.

1) Could this chat window be coded to allow mousedown,"drag" option?
2) Could this chat allow multiple conversations, windows?

Just thought I would ask a couple questions,This chat system is great!

1) I'll look into it. there may be an option to move them around.
2) that's already built-in. just click on another person's name and another chat window will pop up.
this is a one-on-one chat and will NOT be a group chat or "chatroom".

Nearly done with it.

Sorry, I won't be able to get the windows to float in this version. I contacted the original developer but his price for reworking his code is out of my price range, so that won't happen. The good news is, he gave me permission to distribute the addon with original copyright attribution to him and with a disclaimer about non-commercial use.

I can't add the jQueryUI addon for draggable elements to it because of the way the chat windows are called into the DOM, but I'll keep working on it.

All I have left is the admin interface and integrating all of the settings into the panel itself, which is taking much longer than actually getting the chat system to work. I was tempted to release it without any admin interface, but there has to be a way to change visual styles and prune the chat history.

Expect a release in the next week. For now, only my beta testers and administrators have access to the work-in-progress.

I apologize in advance, but I am getting confused. I think I have seen 4 chat systems tested out on this site so far. I would like to implement one on 8, but apart from Arrowchat, I really am confused as to what to get. I appreciate all the work you have put in testing and adapting these candidates, which do you and NetriX recommend?

NetriX
Pretty much the only difference is mine offers chat rooms.

Other than that its' up to you, FreiChat and the one skpacman is releasing are both open source.

I understand the reason behind ArrowChat, although it would have been my first pick. Pfft
